Public Wedding in Senmaida

This information comes to us from Brian, an ALT in Wajima.

It’s that time of year again…Come witness not one but two traditional Japanese weddings in what is perhaps the most photographed spot in the Noto, Wajima’s own Senmaida rice fields, on Sunday, September 19.

Every year, two lucky couples win a lottery to be able to hold their wedding in this picturesque spot by the sea. The ceremony is open to the public and people come from all over to check it out.

Immediately following the wedding, students and members of the community begin harvesting the rice at Senmaida, so don’t miss your last chance of the year to see it before it all gets cut down. Anyone who’s interested in joining in on the slicing and dicing is welcome to jump in and lend a hand!

The weddings start around 9AM this Sunday, September 19, but the wedding parties show up around 8:30 for photos and mingling with the crowd, so show up a bit early if you want to get a good look at the brides and grooms before the ceremony begins. For general guests, it’s standing room only, and that means that you’ll probably be standing in a (dry) rice paddie, so please dress accordingly (especially if you intend to participate in the rice harvest). Also be warned that there are usually roving bands of television reporters hungrily searching the crowds for sound bites from interesting (i.e. foreign) interview subjects, so brush up on all of your flattering adjectives in Japanese and you could be a star.

Senmaida is easily located along the coast on the 249 heading north from Wajima. Parking is limited, but there should be plenty of people parking here and there along the side of the road leading up to Senmaida, so anyone who’s driving shouldn’t have a problem leaving their car somewhere nearby.
Shuttle busses leave from Wajima Station at 8, 8:30, and 9AM (arriving at Senmaida at 8:20, 8:50, and 9:20, respectively).
