Yurari: An Onsen for Your Feet

Want to relax for a bit on your travels but don’t have the time for a proper day at the onsen? If you’re in Wajima, 湯楽里(Yurari) is the place for you!

The Yurari Building

The Yurari Building

湯楽里 is a 22-centimeter deep foot onsen where you can rest and refresh yourself after your travels.  You take off your shoes outside, enter the building, and pick a seat—no charge!  The water contains calcium and sodium and is about 42-43 degrees C or approximately 108-109 degrees F.

According to the signs inside, just having your feet and calves in the hot water for 15-20 minutes is supposed to re-energize you in the same way a full-immersion onsen does.  Indeed, after 15 minutes in the foot onsen after a whole morning of traipsing around Marine Town and the Morning Market in the August sun, I felt refreshed and energized, though my calves looked a bit lobsterish.

Location: 湯楽里 is located on Waichi Street between the Juzo Shrine (重蔵神社) and the Artists’ Workshops (輪島工房長屋)in Wajima-shi.  Five minutes on foot from the Asaichi (Morning Market) area.

Cost: Free!

Hours: 6:00-22:00, everyday. Closed 4-6 pm on Thursdays for cleaning.

Notes: Be sure to bring a towel to dry off your legs and feet!

Leah Zoller is a first-year CIR in Anamizu, and her feet are very relaxed.
